Herbert began waiting for work at the steel mill each day. Herbert and his brothers helped on threshing crews, making $1 a day plus a free noontime meal. They hadn’t fared much better–losing their farm and everything they owned except their clothing and household goods. By the time the effects of the Great Depression were felt in Ohio, Herbert was out of work and he and his new bride had to move in with his parents, Marion and May. Just over one month later, the stock market crashed.
